This Ceramics course is open to everyone wishing to learn how to work with clay and is aimed at Beginners only. Please do not enrol on this course if you already know the basics of this craft.
What are the aims of the course?
The aim of this course is to teach students practical skills to enable them to develop individual clay work.
What does the course involve?
Throughout this course students will learn to:
Construct clay work using four techniques.
The theory behind how to pack and fire an electric kiln appropriately and safely.
Design and make glazes.
Apply glaze appropriately.
Construct simple plaster molds.
All kinds of different objects can be made - some functional, some not. Everyone makes different objects – there are lots of books available to help with ideas. The tutor will show different ways of constructing objects out of clay and how to glaze and fire them.
Topics covered in this course include:
Hand building methods
Throwing on the wheel
Working with moulds
Slab building or slip casting
The theory behind Firing, Kiln Packing and Kiln Firing (Please speak with the tutor about these topics to find out more)
Basic glaze chemistry
Constructing a glaze application.
