Susie Horsley Cooper

Art disciplines: Drawing and painting, Mixed media
My painting practice has evolved into two separate areas of interest. The first, a study of the rural landscape, influenced by artists like Diebenkorn and Lanyon; the second to exploring the internal, historically feminine landscape of the domestic space, particularly the kitchen table, as an emotionally charged site of care, memory and quiet ritual. In this work, I use still life as a vehicle for storytelling, attempting to transform everyday household objects into intimate tableaux that reframe the ordinary, lifting the everyday into the whimsical and poetic, allowing for personal reflection and quiet transformation.
Influenced by artists such as Emma Dunbar and Mary Fedden, I employ bold colour, flattened perspective and carefully composed arrangements with the aim of creating a sense of playful tension between familiarity and imagination. Jugs, bowls, fruit, and flowers become players within a staged moment, their placement suggestive of relationships, rhythms and unseen narratives.
