Art disciplines: Drawing and painting, Mixed media, Printmaking
My work primarily explores themes from the natural world; from both the internal and external landscapes that surround me daily. I will notice a particular object or element of a landscape and describe it on my own terms, using a range of techniques to bring a semi abstract view of the subject matter whilst also describing everyday objects familiar to the viewer.
As a painter/printmaker I combine elements of both disciplines in my work – layering hand printed tissue papers onto textured and painted grounds, then picking out objects and patterns in charcoal as they appear to me. My work evolves through these initial processes – a certain texture, colour or pattern will suggest the path a painting will take, be it inspired by my veggie patch or a shelf of pots and house plants in the kitchen. For me, this free form approach to making art translates into my work, which reflects areas of my life which give me particular joy.
I hope I make interesting and intriguing work that my audience may find themselves looking at closely to work out my processes – art that the viewer will continue to look at and enjoy seeing new details each time or that makes them smile at the often quirkiness of my subject matter.
Exhibiting in collaboration with a fellow Steventon artist, Susie Horsley Cooper, we are fortunate in enjoying a shared space, where we can show our working practices and engage in discussion with visitors and enjoy a cup of tea with them.
