Art disciplines: Woodworking
I’m Liz Pearson, a woodturner working from my small rural workshop near Burghfield, West Berkshire. My business, Love Heartwood, was born from a desire to make beautiful, useful things from sustainable natural materials. My work focuses on creating toys, gifts, and homeware that are kind to both people and the planet.
Working with wood feels natural to me. I’m drawn to its warmth, its unique textures, and the way every piece tells a story. I choose timber that’s as local as possible because I like to celebrate and connect to the environment around me. All my pieces are made on a woodturning lathe using traditional hand tools, a process that allows me to work closely and intuitively with the wood. I enjoy the hands-on nature of turning—feeling the grain, responding to the shape as it forms, and making small adjustments as I go. Each object I make respects the character of the wood, with designs that are simple, honest, and made to last.
Sustainability is at the heart of everything I do. I’m always looking for ways to reduce waste and make my processes more environmentally friendly. That’s why I offer toy repairs and wooden object refurbishments so things can be loved longer instead of thrown away.
I enjoy sharing my love of woodturning with others. The Love Heartwood Turning School offers courses for beginners and hobbyists, offering hands-on learning in a relaxed, supportive setting. These sessions are a chance for people to slow down, connect with nature, and discover the satisfaction of making something with their own hands. I believe creativity should be accessible to everyone, and I love helping people build their confidence and skills.
My work often blurs the line between art and function. I believe everyday objects can be both beautiful and practical. Whether it’s a spinning top, a baby rattle, or a wooden bowl, I want the things I make to feel special, to invite touch and use, and to be treasured for years to come.
In the end, Love Heartwood is about connection—between people and the natural world, between maker and user, and between generations. Through my woodturning, I hope to keep that connection alive by creating meaningful, lasting pieces that people can use and enjoy every day.
