Helen’s work originates in the vessel form; a timeless symbol of containment, femininity, renewal, and hope. This symbolic foundation continues to guide her approach while researching innovative ideas and themes.
She focuses on hand-building techniques, which allow her to explore organic forms and patterns. She is particularly drawn to porcelain for its silkiness, translucency, brilliant whiteness, and long, storied history. Its unique qualities lend themselves beautifully to her exploration of themes such as light, fragility, and resilience, offering a tangible reflection of the human experience.
Her current work centres on Nerikomi, an intricate Japanese technique that layers contrasting coloured clays to create harmonious patterns. Each stratum of clay is thoughtfully arranged to complement and enhance the others. Her inspiration comes from human relationships, and the Nerikomi process mirrors the idea of complementary connections—where differences coexist to form something greater than the sum of their parts. The interplay of textures and hues becomes a visual metaphor for balance, harmony, and mutual enrichment.
Helen strives to minimize the environmental impact of her work by using solar energy in her studio, firing pieces only once whenever possible, and sourcing sustainable materials, aligning practice with ethical principles and respect for the people and places that support the creative process.
