So many artists would love to paint portraits of friends and family, but find portraits rather intimidating. If you would like to start painting faces, or improve your technique then this one day workshop will convince you that capturing people in watercolour is a great way of producing a lively portrait. In September 2023 my fifth book, Painting Portraits in Watercolour, was published by The Crowood Press. This day will bring the book to life!

We will look at the tonal map of the face and work in monochrome, layers and a more direct painting methods. We will explore both literal colours and high energy portraits with a jazzier vibe. These are not portraits to hang in museums but will capture the personality of the subject.

This is a one-day course and will take place on:

Friday 22 March 2024
Friday 11 October 2024

If you are scared of drawing faces, don’t worry. This is a day to concentrate on painting, so we will be using a light pad to transfer our images. No, this is not cheating! Vermeer (who wasn’t half bad), used a Camera Obscura, as did Joshua Reynolds. We will use technology to allow us to concentrate on technique. Some experience in using watercolour is helpful!

All materials are provided, along with tea/coffee. If you love painting in watercolours you will be provided with plenty of stimulation!

The price per person is £99. The workshop is held at the beautiful Micklems Farm, and the setting provides a relaxing and welcoming venue for the day.
