Open Studios 2020
Those familiar with the annual Open Studios event will know that it is a fantastic opportunity to visit the studios of over 100 local artists in West Berkshire and North Hampshire, to see their art, and in some cases watch them creating art in their studios. It is also an opportunity for artists to sell their work, and for the public to purchase unique works of art for themselves and others.
Thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, and the UK lockdown, Open Studios as we have known it for over 30 years, won’t be happening in 2020; however, the committee have been working behind the scenes to find a way to exhibit the work of the OS Open Studios artists, without the risk of infection.
From 4 April the Open Studios 2020 website will be live: www.open-studios.org.uk The homepage features a montage of pictures of all participating artists work – the pictures change randomly each time the page is opened. You can click on any image to be taken to a page dedicated to that artist, with up to 3 more images of their work, and links to their own websites, Instagram or Facebook pages.
The other major element of each Open Studios is the INSIGHT 2020 exhibition, which was to have been held at The Base on Greenham Business Park. In its place we have a virtual exhibition on the website, with each artist submitting their ‘star piece’ of work. Open Studios usually takes place just in the month of May each year, but in these unusual circumstances, the website will be up for the rest of the year, and the committee will be stepping up the Open Studios social media postings to encourage as many as possible to visit the website and in turn to find out more about the wonderful artists represented there. We will be using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to share the work of each of the 109 artists taking part. We have artists working in a huge range of media, including wood, glass, ceramics, oils, watercolours, fabric, metal, photography and print.
Prior to the recent lockdown, I visited a number of the participating artists, and the interviews will also be published here and on the website, so you can find out more about their inspirations and personal journeys.
There is so much wonderful art to see on the website – so please take a look, and help support our artists in this difficult time.
