Nick Collins is an experienced photographer and architect, based in Berkshire. He has been involved in photographing Open Studios at City Arts for a number of years and was encouraged by his fellow artists to display his portfolio of photographic prints during Open Studios 2024. During that exhibition, he was further encouraged to revisit pen and ink drawing, something he hadn’t done since his days studying architecture at university.
In addition to this, Nick wanted to find a new opportunity of working as a contrast to his day job, where detail and accuracy are fundamental, and to find a way of expressing the urban landscape in a more free and expressive way. He has therefore started to explore watercolour washes, a medium that is often difficult to control.
After early successes during Open Studios, Nick has worked hard developing both his style and the use of the various media, continuing to focus on local landmarks, architecture and wider urban environments around Berkshire. Nick’s photography typically focused on black and white images but the expressive nature of colour opens up new opportunity to represent the vibrancy and movement of urban landscapes. He also draws on his photographic skill of composition and architectural knowledge of detail and perspective.
Nick is continuing to develop his approach and is currently working on scaling up his art from initial a4 sketches previously exhibited to larger canvas pieces and looks forward to presenting these at Open Studios 25.
