I produce highly textured mixed media paintings focused on the landscape in its varieties – urban, rural, coastal and sometimes wild. I am particularly interested in how the landscape changes with the passage of time – not just seasonal change but how the landscape is shaped by human intervention, environmental forces, climate change and nature’s adaptations.
My process involves the use of mixed water media on paper. Works are typically built in layers of paint and hand-prepared collage papers which are often torn back and partially painted over. This layering process leads to rich textural effects.
My current focus is a major series of works resulting from time spent on artists residencies in Iceland. I also like to produce semi-abstract landscapes from the imagination. These involve starting with very loose initial watercolour washes where the paint is allowed to flow freely and then responding intuitively to build up a final image using collage and paint.
I have a range of linocut prints which are again built up with my hand painted collage papers.
