I am a professional landscape artist based in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. My main fascination is with trees and part of my work is exploring the current and historical relationships we have with woodlands. Having always lived near ‘the woods’, I have been fascinated by arboreal stories, both ancient, mythical and personal. As a child I created fairylands and hideaways, as an adult I wander through ancient woods, copses and forests, discovering space to reflect, noticing patterns and stories, breathing in the smells and occasionally hugging a friendly tree.
Working from my own photographs, I start with a black canvas over which I use layers of paint to create lively contrasts, intense colour, shapes and light with distinctive broken brushmarks. With this technique the experience of the painting changes as you move closer to the surface of the canvas and back out again, akin to zooming into a pixelated image, creating further compositions within the construction of marks.
I chase seasons and light and hope that you feel the invitation of each painting to step in and wander through the woods.
