Artist Statement
During Open Studios 2023 Shirley Eccles will be exhibiting her Glass art and Jewellery at the Sandham Memorial Chapel in Burghclere. This new venue will bring fresh ideas and inspiration.
As a glass artist she continues to push the boundaries in Kiln formed glass and it is the qualities and character of the different techniques that fascinates her. It is the feeling and mood they convey, that involve her both physically and emotionally.
Although Shirley mainly works in glass, she uses the fragility and sensitivity of the material, to express and convey social issues, memory, reflecting time and personal experiences. It is the sense of discovery and the challenge of the unknown that inspires her to explore new avenues.
In some of her latest pieces she has combined her glass and silver techniques to create small intimate artworks.
She holds a BA Degree in both Fine Art and Ceramics & Glass and does not bind herself to one idea or making process in glass. It is a medium of expression, whether it is Conceptual Art, an Installation or Applied Arts. Each concept demands a different technique. The quality of the medium reflects the meaning and content within her work.
Shirley shares her passion for glass by running a variety of glass courses, both in schools and for adults. For more information Shirley can be contacted via email: Shirley.e@btopenworld.com
