‘On Reflection’
This series of paintings is inspired and influenced by ideas and artists who have had an enduring relevance to my work.
The paintings ‘Giverny’ recall a visit to Monet’s garden some years ago. I was with a group of students and we spent time sketching the water lily ponds. During May 2020 whilst on a riverside walk I was looking at reflections of trees which reminded me of the Giverny visit. In 2019 I visited the RWA Bristol to see the work of Alf Stockham, my tutor at Bristol Art College and I was impressed by the vibrancy of his pointillist paintings and recalled our discussions about colour. I had also been thinking about the works of Ian Stevenson recently exhibited at New Art Centre at Roche Court Salisbury, which I had first seen in the 1970’s. I was struck by the impact a dot of colour can achieve.
‘On Reflection’ is the outcome of this inspiration, exploring swarming and cascading colour fusions. A selection of small paintings from this series will be exhibited during Open Studios at Sandham Memorial Chapel , Burghclere, see exhibition entry for opening times.
