In 2025, Artists at the Chapel will show the work of Isabel Carmona, Helen Long and Christine Highnett at the chapel at Newtown Road Cemetery during May 2025 each with work in development from their current practice.
Isabel has been working on ink and watercolour landscapes (both real and imagined) and also developing collagraph prints from them. She will also show her sketchbooks that are a collation of moments of inspiration collected wherever she goes.
Christine's textile work continues to develop with eco printing on fabric and paper gathering inspiration from walks, holidays and garden. Eco printing always rewards her with images that are very organic and natural. She will also focus on combining creative textiles with photography and mixed media, adding some beautiful hand and machine embroidery, to create both 2D and 3D unique artworks with a contemporary feel.
Helen’s new work draws inspiration from Japanese aesthetics, particularly the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and celebrates the serendipitous nature of creation. She continues her exploration of Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese technique which involves layering and blending clays that are carefully stained to create intricate patterns and textures. Like the natural world, Helen's ceramics embrace irregularities as part of their charm, revealing an authenticity and harmony that feels both timeless and deeply human.
Artists at the Chapel at the Newtown Road Cemetery are kindly sponsored by Newbury Town Council.
